Lake Norman Area Information
Named after former Duke Power president Norman Cocke, Lake Norman is the largest body of freshwater in the state of North Carolina. Lake Norman is an "inland sea" with 520 miles of shoreline, a surface area of more than 32,475 acres, 34 miles in length, and located 20 miles north of Charlotte, NC.
Lake Norman was created in 1963 when the state of North Carolina blocked off the Catawba River with Cowans Ford Dam. Lake Norman has since evolved into one of the most renowned metropolitan lakes in the country with shopping, commerce, and dining to rival its Charlotte neighbor.
